The BMW Z8 roadster was manufactured from 1998 to 2006. The Z8 was developed under the codename "E52" between 1993 and 1999. The Z8 originally was designed as a styling exercise intended to evoke and celebrate the 1956–1959 BMW 507. A concept model was later developed to preview the Z8, called the Z07 and was showcased in October 1997 at the Tokyo Motor Show.
The Z8 had an all-aluminum chassis and body, and used a 4,941 cc (4.9 L; 301.5 cu in) V8 engine which has a power output of 400 PS (294 kW; 395 hp) at 6,600 rpm and 500 Nm (369 lb.ft) of torque at 3,800 rpm. This engine, known internally as the S62, was built by BMW Motorsport and was shared with the E39 M5 sports saloon.
BMW Z8 (E52 based; 2000–2003) The Z8 was produced from 2000 to 2003 and was the production variant of the 1997 Z07 concept car. The Z07 was a design style exercise to celebrate the 1950s 507 roadster. Overwhelming popularity of the concept spurred BMW's decision to produce a limited production (5,703 cars) called the Z8 model.
A total of 5,704 BMW Z8 models were built, 3,160 of them were distributed in Europe and worldwide, except in North America which got 2,543. Additionally, in 2003 Tuner was entrusted to build their version of the Z8 in limited numbers. The 2003 Turner Alpina Roadster V8 added the 4.8 L M62 V8 (Alpina version engine) with tuner’s Alpina version being converted from a sports car into a GT.
