The first generation of the BMW Z4 models consists of a roadster (E85) body style, with a coupé (E86) body style being added in 2006. The Z4 was introduced at the Paris Motor Show in 2002, and North American models went on sale in November of the same year (as 2003 models). European sales began in March 2003..

BMW Z4 (E85/E86; based 2003–2008) The first-generation BMW Z4 was produced as a E85 roadster, and E86 coupé. The Z4's design was larger then the Z3 and featured a significantly stiffer chassis.

BMW Z4 (E89 based; 2009–2016) The second-generation Z4 debuted at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and was the first Z Series model to use a retractable hardtop.

BMW Z4 (G29 based; 2018–present) The G29 Z4 is the third and current generation Z4 which was unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on 23 August 2018. It reuses the soft-top convertible roof found on the E85 Z4 and shares its platform with the J29 Toyota Supra.
