The BMW Z3 Models

BMW Z3 (E36/7, E36/8 based; 1995–2002) The Z3 was introduced for the 1996 model year shortly after being featured in the James Bond movie GoldenEye, and more than 15,000 were sold by the time the car was introduced. The Z3 underwent a facelift in 1999 with the introduction of a coupé body style and revised styling.

The Z3 is the first mass-produced Z Series car and was based on the E36 3 Series platform. M models were introduced in 1998 in roadster and coupé body styles and were powered by the S50, S52, or S54 straight-six engine depending on country and model year. The M models came with a 5-speed manual transmission.

  • Development on the Z3 roadster began in 1991, finalized in 1993 with design patents filed on April 2, 1994 in Germany, and on September 27, 1994, in the US.
  • Development on the Z3 coupé was run by a group of BMW engineers outside of work in their own time. The Z3 Coupé was unveiled at the 1997 Frankfurt Motor Show shares the same platform and parts with the roadster.

The Z3 Motorsport M version was introduced in 1997 in the roadster (M Roadster) and coupé (M Coupé) body styles. European model production began with the S50 inline-six, while North American models were powered by the S52 inline-six. In 2001 both the European and North American models had the new S54 engine. M models featured a limited slip differential, a wider rear track, and larger brakes among other variations.

A total of 297,088 Z3 units were built between 1995 and 2002. These included a number of special edition models, which were distinguished by special paint colors and high-quality equipment details. The first of these was the James Bond Edition, of which only 100 were produced for the US market in 1996.
