The X2 is based on the same front-wheel drive UKL2 architecture as the X1 and MINI Countryman. The X2 is assembled in Regensburg, Germany and is available with xDrive all-wheel drive on higher end models. Both the sDrive28i and xDrive28i models are available in North American markets. A plug-in hybrid variant, called the xDrive 25e, was unveiled in January 2020, and in September 2020 BMW presented the special sporty variant M Mesh Edition.

The X2 is offered in a standard, M Sport, and M Sport X trim. sDrive18i and 18d models are available with a 6-speed manual transmission, while sDrive18i models can be upgraded to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The rest of the model range uses an 8-speed automatic transmission. Models with the M Sport trim and M35 models can be fitted with M Performance Parts. These include black lower bumpers, carbon fiber mirrors, a sport steering wheel and black side skirts.

The first generation X2 F39 was manufactured for model years 2017-present. The F39 is the first generation of the X2, it was first showcased as the BMW Concept X2 at the 2016 Paris Motor Show and is considered a sportier and less practical alternative to the X1. Sales commenced in March 2018.
