The BMW 3 Series is a compact executive car manufactured by BMW since May 1975 and is currently in its seven generation. The first generation offered only a 2–door sedan, with later generations adding a 4–door sedan, 2–door convertible, 2–door coupé, 5–door station wagon, 5–door hatchback ("Gran Turismo") and 3–door hatchback body styles. In 2013, the coupé and convertible models were transferred to the 4 Series.

The first generation of 3 series E21 was manufactured for model years 1975-1982. A cabriolet body style - manufactured by Baur - was available from 1978 to 1981.

The second generation of 3 series E30 was manufactured for model years 1982-1990. Models expanded from the original 2-door sedan body style to also include a four-door sedan in 1983, convertibles in 1985 and estate ("Touring") models in 1987.

The third generation of 3 series E36 was manufactured for model years 1990-1997 and included body styles: sedan, coupé, convertible, wagon (marketed as "Touring") and hatchback (marketed as "3 Series Compact"). The BMW Z3 roadster and coupe models were based on the E36 platform.

The fourth generation of 3 series E46 was manufactured for model years 1997-2004 and included body styles: sedan, coupé, convertible, wagon (marketed as "Touring") and hatchback (marketed as "3 Series Compact").

The fifth generation of 3 series E90/E91/E92/E93 was manufactured for model years 2004-2013 with body styles: sedan, wagon, coupé and cabriolet body styles. With multi body style codes, the term "E9X" is often used for this generation of the 3 Series.

The sixth generation of 3 series F30/F31/F34/F35 was manufactured for model years 2011-2019 with body styles: sedan, coupé, convertible, station wagon and 5-door hatchback ("Gran Turismo"), and long wheelbase Gran Turismo sedan. The coupe and convertible produced from 2013-2014 were moved from the 3 Series to the 4 Series.

The seventh generation of 3 series G20/G21/G28 was manufactured for model years 2018-present and also offered as a station wagon. The more powerful M3 and M3 Competition variants were delivered globally starting in 2021.

M3 models have been derived from the E30, E36, E46, E90/E92/E93, and F30 (designated F80) 3 series, and sold with coupe, sedan and convertible body styles.
