The BMW 2 Series is a subcompact executive car (C-segment) produced with several body styles including a compact coupé, convertible, MPV body Active Tourer and in 2015 a seven seater Gran Tourer was added. The 2 Series Active Tourer mechanicals are unrelated to the coupé and convertible models'. It is built on a front wheel drive platform that is shared with the third generation MINI Cooper, dubbed UKL1.

The first generation of 2 series F22/F23 M2 (F87) was manufactured for model years 2014-2021. Models included rear-wheel-drive 2-door coupé (F22 model code), and 2-door convertible (F23 model code). The coupé version of the 2 Series is used as the basis for the high performance F87 M2 model powered by the BMW N55 and S55 turbocharged inline-six engines.

The second generation of 2 series G42/G43 is manufactured for model years 2021-present. The G42 is built on the CLAR platform with a roughly 50:50 weight distribution. The second-generation 2 Series coupé is not available with a manual transmission, The G43 is a convertible body style. Launch models consist of the mild hybrid diesel engine 220d, the petrol engine 220i and 230i and the M240i xDrive.
